Under the blazing sky, on the side of the road on the coast of Ceará, Motel Destino is the scene of dangerous games of desire, power and violence. One night, the arrival of the young Heraldo permanently transforms the everyday life of the place. Karim Aïnouz’s sixth film to have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, after Madame Satã (2002), O Abismo Prateado (2011). “Motel Destino”; a quiet but eventful erotic thriller with traces of contemporary noir, as it tells about the need to escape and the obstacles that come with it. In this desperate desire to escape, one may find oneself trapped in other situations, or one may find accommodation and a destiny to fulfill. Our hero, the young Heraldo (Iago Xavier), finds both while using a motel as a hideout in a desert part of Ceará, fleeing a criminal group after failing to shoot a comrade.
His original plan was to do his last criminal job and move to São Paulo to find honest work. The motel of the title is run by a middle-aged couple, Elias (Fábio Assunção) and his wife Dayana (Nataly Rocha), he as manager and she as multitasking receptionist. In exchange for his help, Heraldo works at the motel fixing electrical things or anything that needs fixing and cleaning. In the company of the lonely, Elias finds Heraldo as a hard-working friend, and Dayana acquires a new lover in a torrid affair, who is hidden from her husband and the patrons who frequent the place (they hardly see her, instead hearing loud sexual moans in the world). background). Karim Aïnouz' the latest film is convincing, but not completely; sexy and daring, but with a little excitement and a lot of unexpected humor.
It’s almost like taking elements of film noir (lonely, troubled and violent characters) but set in a motel surrounded by the stunningly beautiful beaches of Ceará – a sight so beautiful it’s like seeing another world. There’s an emotional complexity to the story, which is good, but it can leave you feeling empty or feeling like you’ve gained or experienced little. It’s not as fast-paced as it could be, but it’s somewhat satisfying and very exciting. Deep down is a film about the human element of hiding and how these characters deal with escaping dangerous situations, hiding from themselves and others (as evidenced by Elias’ small steps in Heraldo), and ultimately, any form of escape has many unexpected results. : passion. The "Motel Destino" comes from acting.
Iago and Nataly made an interesting and sexually charged couple with great chemistry. Although I don’t find his acting that strong and some of his lines sound weird, I find him very suitable for the role. Heraldo is in the limelight for good reason as it appeals to the everyday man. to the one that attracts both women and men (we have a fourth hotel worker, played by Yuri Yamamoto, who likes Heraldo, but the script overshadowed him with whispered lines. For a newcomer, Iago was quite good in the more daring sex sequences. And then there is Fábio Assunção.
An entire generation remembers her as the darling of soap operas a few decades ago, and others who followed her decline only a short time ago. He doesn’t do many movies, but this should make him memorable as a movie actor.
